3D rendering of the new Viên Thông Pagoda

The construction process will take time, to ensure that donations from supporters are cautiously spent. The new Viên Thông Pagoda will be built with the blending of the charismatic traditional architecture of Vietnamese Buddhists and the practicality of the Western culture. All the artistic works will be under the supervision of Ven. Minh Liên, the majority of these works are being designed by nun Viên Thuận.

The new Viên Thông offers the following proposed characteristics:

  1. The three-door gateway. Captivates the originality of oriental architecture.

  2. The front courtyard. Will be a place for visitors to enjoy, and an outdoor exercise facility.

  3. The Lotus pond and the stone cave.

  4. The forecourt with Drum and Bell towers on the two sides.

  5. The main sanctuary or Buddha Hall. Two statues of Dharma Protectors will guard the entrance doors to the Buddha Hall. The serenity and the reverence of the Buddha Hall will be eloquently articulated by the statues of the many well adored Buddhas and Bodhisattvas: the Trinity of the Western Pure Land (Amitabha – Buddha of Infinite Light; Avalokitesvara – Bodhisattva of Great Compassion; and Mahasthamaprata – Bodhisattva of Great Strength); Shakyamuni Buddha, the Foremost Teacher of Buddhism, attended, on his right, by Bodhisattva Manjusri riding a Lion, symbolizing Supreme Wisdom, and on his left, by Bodhisattva Samantabhadra, riding an elephant, symbolizing Great Action; in front of the sangha platform will be the magnificent stone carving of the Thousand Arms and Thousand Eyes Bodhisattva, Mother of Eternal Compassion.

  6. The ancestral worship area. At the center, will be the statue of Bodhidarma, the foremost Zen Master, and the pictures of many foremothers of the Vietnam Buddhist faith. On their left will be pictures of deceased male Buddhists and on the right will be those of female Buddhists.

  7. The auditorium. A very versatile area. Its layout may be used as a lecture hall, an indoor exercise facility, a dinner hall, a retreat facility, youth activities, etc.

  8. Departing from adorning the panorama with the traditional Four Relic Sites, depicting the life of Shakyamuni Buddha, new Viên Thông will enchant its congregation and visitors with the glowing love radiated from the twelve statues of the Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, the Mother of Compassion. Each statue manifests one of the Bodhisattva’s twelve vows. A graceful promenade will flowingly encircle the statues. This charismatic rendition will be an ideal inspiration for those who enjoy the peacefulness of walking meditation. At each step, each breath, each statue, the leisure walkers will be delighted in compassion, serenity, and harmony – the miracle of inner peace .
